Chicago police say they tried to stop a vehicle near 69th and Halsted while officers were patrolling an area known for gang and drug activity. A man got out and ran away.
The officers chased after him, at which point the offender allegedly turned and pointed a weapon at the officers.
One officer discharged his weapon, striking the man and killing him.
The man had not been identified later Wednesday morning.
The shooting will now be investigated by the Independent Police Review Authority.
