A coalition of 15 medical groups agrees hormone replacement therapy or HRT is generally safe for some women.

The groups say HRT is acceptable and relatively safe for healthy symptomatic women who are within 10 years of starting menopause. The goal of the statement released Monday is to reassure women and doctors.

Over the last 10 years there has been a complete abandonment of HRT in some settings. The controversy began when the Women's Health Initiative study found a found a link to HRT, breast cancer and heart disease.
