A dozen alleged gang members are jailed following a nationwide crackdown on gangs with ties to drug trafficking. US immigration and customs officials announced the arrests in Washington DC Wednesday morning.

The crackdown occurred in 83 cities, including Chicago, and resulted in the arrests of 500 suspects.

Dubbed "Project: Big Freeze," it was the largest effort of its kind.

All 12 of those arrested in the Chicago area are reportedly eligible for deportation.
