CHICAGO (WLS) -- Our coverage of this story has moved here.

A man was killed and a suspect was among three others injured in a South Side shooting on Monday afternoon, Chicago police said.

Crime scene tape stretched across long swaths of two blocks, guarded by dozens of police officers. Behind the tape, at least six bullet casings lay spent along the sidewalk south of 71st and State streets.

Police said it all started with a dispute that led to gunfire just before 6 p.m. in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood. No one nearby could quite count how many gunshots they heard.

"A group of kids ran inside the store. They were scared. Some of them were screaming," said Khalid Abdulrab, who works nearby. "One of the girls was crying inside the store."

According to preliminary police information, a male suspect, whose age was not immediately known, got into a dispute with someone, who they shot in the leg.

A man was killed and a suspect is among three others injured after a South Side shooting on Monday afternoon, Chicago police said.

Another person then exchanged gunfire with the suspect, striking him in his leg.

Police said officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert and found two men, who had been shot, on the ground.

A 59-year-old man, shot in the abdomen, was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

A 49-year-old man, who had been standing at a nearby ATM, was shot in his forehead. He was taken to the same hospital in grave condition.

Police believe those two men were innocent bystanders in the incident.

Police got a description of the suspect, who officers later found and placed in custody. He was taken to Christ Hospital in critical condition.

The person from the original dispute, who, police say, the suspect shot in the leg, later arrived at he University of Chicago Medical Center.

The person who allegedly shot the suspect has not been identified, and police are looking for information that might lead them to that person.

Witnesses said children nearby went running for cover in any direction when the gunfire erupted, sprinting inside a nearby gas station and a Subway sandwich shop.

"When I got here, there were children who had been separated from their adult guardians, and they were cowering in Subway, crying, because they thought their lives were about to be over," said Shiloh 7th Day Adventist Church Pastor John T. Boston II.

Police said one of the four gunshot victims went running into the same Subway, around the corner from where the shooting began.

Bullet holes shattered the glass of a store at the center of the scene, becoming collateral damage from the shooting.

"It's a punch in the gut of everything that we're trying to do for children to feel safe, for families not to be worried that their children's lives are going to be taken as they walk up and down this corridor," Boston said.

Police did not immediately provide further information.
